Below, we will examine both the spay and neuter procedure in more detail, review the benefits of the surgery, and help you determine when the right time to spay or neuter your pet. Both of these services are offered at Hamptons Animal Hospital / Spay & Neuter Centre in Edmonton. Our veterinarians will be able to address any of your concerns involving the procedure during your appointment.
What is spay and neuter?
Spay and neuter is a way to make your pets sterile, or unable to produce offspring. Female pets undergo a surgery known as spaying. In this surgery, the veterinarian will remove the uterus. Male pets undergo a surgery called neutering. During this surgery, your male pet will have his testicles surgically removed. Both surgeries are performed under anesthesia and are very quick, routine surgeries with very minimal risk involved.
What are the benefits?
For male and female pets alike, there are several benefits associated with spaying or neutering. Many diseases can be completely prevented through this surgery. For females, spaying can help prevent uterine infections and can prevent breast tumors which can become cancerous. By neutering your male pet you can completely prevent testicular cancer and many prostate diseases. There are several behavioral benefits as well. Male dogs are less likely to exhibit roaming behaviors once they have been neutered and it can reduce aggression in male dogs. In cats, many undesirable behaviors, such as spraying, can be greatly reduced or eliminated completely with surgery.
When should you get your pet spayed or neutered?
Ideally, pets should be spayed or neutered when they are young. The normal age for dogs to be spayed or neutered is six to nine months of age, although puppies as young as eight weeks old are great candidates for the surgery if they are in good health. Cats also can be spayed or neutered as young as eight weeks old. Commonly, shelters will perform the surgery prior to adoption to help control pet populations. Of course, spay and neuter surgery can be performed on a pet at any age. The risk associated with the surgery increases as the pet becomes older.
