The Physical Exam at Your Edmonton Vet
When you come in with your pet for an exam our vet will start by taking their temperature. If your pet has a high temperature it could be a sign of an infection. Our vet will examine your pet's hair and skin to look for parasites and signs of infection. Many dogs and cat get fleas, ticks, and mites. Your pet's eyes will be examined. The vet will look for signs of redness, discharge, and cataracts. When the vet examines your pet's ears they look for signs of redness, scabs, parasites, and ear mites.
Our vet will examine your pet’s legs, stomach, and body to check for lumps and unusual physical reactions. The vet will listen to your pet's heart and lungs using a stethoscope. Blood tests are often taken and sent to the lab. We will look into your pet's mouth to see the condition of their teeth and if they need dental services. Cleaning your pet's teeth is an important part of good health. We check their paws and toenails. Long nails will be cut using safe tools.
Lab tests are often run to get a complete picture of your pet's health. These are blood count, biochemistry profile, urine analysis, and thyroid hormone testing. Sometimes chest or abdominal x-rays are taken. When all the results are in our vet will call you with a diagnosis and treatment plan for your pet.
During the exam, depending on your pet's age the vet might vaccinate them for protection against disease. Your pet might be given medications for worms and have their ears cleaned due to parasites. Often medicated drops are used to cure the infection in the ears.
